California Governor to contemplate run for White House in 2028

(MENAFN) California Governor Gavin Newsom indicated on Sunday that he is considering a bid for the White House in 2028, describing President Donald Trump as "a wrecking ball."

"Yeah, I'd be lying otherwise," Newsom, 58, said in an interview with a news agency Sunday Morning, addressing the possibility of entering the presidential race. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not — I can't do that."

Newsom’s second term as governor concludes in January 2027, and state term limits prevent him from seeking another gubernatorial term. He noted that an official announcement regarding a presidential run is still likely several years away. "Fate will determine that," he said.

Currently, Newsom is focused on redrawing California’s congressional maps, a move that could add up to five new Democratic seats. This effort comes in response to Texas passing a redistricting bill that may add five new Republican seats, aiming to preserve the GOP majority in Congress ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Unlike Texas, where Republican Governor Greg Abbott and the state legislature enacted the new congressional maps into law, Newsom placed Proposition 50 on the California ballot for the November 4 election, letting voters decide.

Newsom has also been vocal in publicly challenging Trump. "He's a wrecking ball," he said. "He's wrecking alliances, truth, trust, tradition, institutions."
