Experts Warn AI-Generated Media on Social Platforms Fuels False Memories
Research suggests that since 2022, roughly 15 billion AI-generated images have circulated on social media platforms, with about 71% of visual content online believed to be AI-created.
Video-focused platforms like TikTok alone host more than 1.3 billion videos labeled as AI-generated, blurring the line between genuine and artificial media.
A study conducted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that individuals exposed to AI-manipulated visuals reported twice as many false memories as participants in control groups. Researchers noted that the brain naturally treats visual input as highly reliable, making it susceptible to misinformation.
The research also revealed that repeated exposure to hyper-realistic AI media fosters a sense of familiarity, causing the mind to encode fabricated content as actual personal experiences.
Elizabeth Loftus, a psychology professor and memory expert at University of California, Irvine, told reports that convincingly produced AI content can permanently alter memory, leading people to genuinely believe in events that never occurred.
Loftus described the effect as creating “honest liars,” individuals who sincerely recall fabricated incidents. “And with social media, the capability of sharing this fake information is enhanced far more today than, you know, 20 years ago, so, we have seen many more people being able to share this information and influence other people,” she added, highlighting how modern platforms amplify the spread and impact of AI-generated misinformation.
