Sentinel ICBM Program Focuses on Cyber Applications During California Forum

VANDENBERG SPACE FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Air Force Global Strike Command’s Sentinel Task Force Detachment 9 helped to launch intercontinental ballistic missile modernization into a new era by hosting the inaugural Vandenberg Space Force Base Sentinel Cyber Forum.

The multi-agency event demonstrated the progress of the Sentinel program through Total Force Integration, bringing together active-duty Airmen, Space Force Guardians from Space Launch Delta 30 and California Air National Guardsmen, government civilians and industry partners to strengthen collaboration and align mission support specific to Vandenberg.

“The VSFB Cyber Forum was foundational in aligning the key stakeholders that will establish and institute the capabilities and systems needed to support Sentinel flight test operations. This event focused on building relationships and understanding network functionality and requirements to further develop a cyber defense strategy for cyber operations supporting test,” said Lt. Col Suzy. Lamar, Sentinel Task Force Detachment 9 commander. “In today’s environment, it’s more important than ever to safeguard and protect information, and this team will be critical in that effort.”

The Sentinel Task Force is ultimately responsible for overseeing and coordinating local transition and deployment activities between the Minuteman III and Sentinel weapon systems while keeping unit of effort by integrating, synchronizing, and coordinating activities at Vandenberg.

The forum provided opportunities for on-site immersion, giving visiting planners, engineers and program leads their first opportunity to see Vandenberg’s facilities up close. During the Cyber Forum’s first day, Sentinel Task Force members led attendees on a guided tour, seeing firsthand the installation’s initial missile processing facilities to the dedicated launch pads on the Western Range.

Following the site tour, participants transitioned into two days of cross-mission briefings aimed at establishing working relationships across functional teams. Representatives from each organization briefed on their respective roles, mission requirements and operational capabilities.

“Sentinel’s success depends on more than advanced technology; it depends on disciplined collaboration among the people and organizations responsible for delivering and defending the networks behind the mission,” said Capt. Matthew Woodard, Air Force Global Strike Command ICBM Modernization Cyber Integration Branch chief. “The VSFB Cyber Forum created that common operating picture, helping partners break down barriers, align responsibilities and build a stronger cyber foundation for Sentinel flight test operations at Vandenberg.”

As Vandenberg serves as the foundational testing and flight development proving ground for Sentinel, establishing secure, synchronized mission integration is a necessary first step toward program success. As Sentinel continues its development test campaign on the way to operational capability, gatherings such as the Cyber Forum aim to create a standardized blueprint that ensure the future ICBM is successfully deployed across operational missile wings in the future.
